Clay Man of Cheese and Crackers

It wasn’t a job for one man
let alone a clay man of cheese and crackers.
At night after the lights on the block went out,
all we could hear was a single newscaster
announcing the football scores,
the Rams, the Raiders, a torch light still burning
until one of us, feeling our wings in the semi-dark,
found the remote and pressed STOP.

I imagine how he lay on his back in the exercise yard
resting after a hard day’s work
dreaming who knows what, pinwheels of flame,
buried in horse manure for forty days, some shit like that,
patted down with an electro-magnet
until something stirred.
